The Kwara Kiddies League has officially announced the commencement of its 2026 season, marking a significant milestone as the competition enters its fifth edition since its inception in 2022.
Established with a unique developmental vision, the league was created not only to provide structured football competition for young talents but also to ensure continuity in player development. Many of the players who began their journeys in the league as Under-12 footballers are now progressing into the Under-16 category, reflecting the league’s long-term commitment to nurturing talent through every stage of grassroots football.
The 2026 season promises to be the league’s biggest yet, with 14 grassroots teams expected to participate across the campaign. More than 500 registered players will compete during the season, while fans and stakeholders can look forward to 182 live matches, further strengthening the league’s commitment to visibility and player exposure.
As tradition demands, the season will begin with the highly anticipated 2026 Community Shield, scheduled for Sunday, 31st May 2026. The annual curtain-raiser fixture will officially signal the kick-off of another exciting campaign as reigning champions Kwara Football Academy (KFA) face a team made up of selected standout players from the previous season.
Following the Community Shield, the league season proper will commence on Saturday, 6th June 2026, with an opening fixture between Barca Kiddies and Unicorn FA, scheduled for 9:00 AM at the KFA Main Pitch.
In preparation for the new season, the league has introduced stricter compliance measures aimed at improving standards across participating clubs. As part of a new league policy, all academies participating in the competition have now completed Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration requirements as part of efforts to meet licensing standards and strengthen institutional structures.
Participating teams have also improved their operational systems and internal structures to align with the growing demands of modern grassroots football and meet evolving global standards.
Speaking on preparations for the new season, the Chief Operating Officer of the league, Ibrahim Jatto, expressed optimism about what lies ahead for players, clubs, and stakeholders.
“Season Five of the Kwara Kiddies League is ready with a lot of innovation and developmental initiatives focused on the right growth pathway for our players. We remain committed to creating an environment where young footballers can develop both on and off the pitch,” he said.
Jatto further revealed that the league would continue its partnership with Wyscout for the second consecutive season, ensuring detailed player data, statistics, and performance analysis remain central to player development and talent identification efforts.
“For the second season running, we are retaining Wyscout for data and player statistics, while we are also assessing additional data platforms that can further support the growth of the league and provide greater exposure opportunities for our players,” he added.
The COO also highlighted several player-focused initiatives planned for the season, including educational and empowerment opportunities.
“Beyond football, the league will provide several incentives for participating players, including scholarship opportunities and vocational support programmes during the season. Our goal is to ensure holistic development.”
The league also confirmed that the Taiwo Awoniyi Foundation will serve as the title sponsor for the 2026 season, with plans to introduce support initiatives and packages aimed at strengthening the competition and enhancing player experiences.
